I'm working on putting together a new portfolio site at the moment. So I've been going through a lot of old work files and sketches and stuff. And I found this old Norma Jean video I did together with Popcore back in 2006. I think it was the first music video I ever worked on. And I still really like it, anyway check it out above.

CHAMELEON PORTRAIT - Print release

Finally! My first print is here. I'm so excited. The details on it looks amazing the printers did a great job.
It's screenprinted in 4 colors on 250 grams acid free paper, 50x70cm in size, in a limited edition of 70 copies.
And off cause hand numbered and signed. Check out some photos here below;

Artist Proof

I been thinking about releasing art-prints for such a long time now, and now it's finally happening. This week I received the artist proof of my first art print :) And it's looking great, the details in the print work are amazing. It's a 4 color screen print on 250 grams acid free paper stock, 50 by 70cm, in a limited edition run of 70 copies. I'm so pleased with how this turned out and can't wait to get it out there. So stay tuned for more information on sales it will be available soon.

So this first print is the first illustration I made in my chameleon series, a portrait built up out of chameleons piled on top of each other. Below are a few photos of the artist proof.

Just finished this illustration the other week. It's an illustration for a folder about music rehearsal spaces and courses in music and so on. It folds in 2 places and stretches across the front and back of the folder so the half on the right is the outer 3 pages of the folder and the left half, are printed on the inside 3 pages, and then on top of that is a text layer with all the information.

Below are my original ink drawings before coloring, some of them didn't fit into the final composition.

I made a few different color suggestions so here are a few more, I think we ended up settling on the red one at the bottom. (click for bigger versions)

Creative Summit 2011

Been attending the annual Creative Summit conference in Skellefteå this week. Had a great time meeting up all the people from the North Kingdom Stockholm office. And checked out some interesting speakers. By far the coolest thing was Lorne Peterson's presentation, Lorne worked as a model maker at ILM for many many years, and is now retired since a few years back. He has worked on all the 6 Star Wars films and the Indiana Jones films, Alive, ET and a lot of other cool films. Great to hear him tell stories about how things where done, and different unexpected materials they used to achieve different looks and effects.

It's been a crazy sunny day here today, but I've been at the office all day so didn't catch much sun.
Working on a lot of new ink work right now, just started on a new record cover design, that has crazy amounts of ink work.
It should be done in a couple of weeks I hope. And then I have some new personal stuff in the works as well.

Anyway, speaking of ink I thought I would share a drawing from last year.
Forgot about posting it when it was done.
It started out just as an experiment in drawing fur, but ended up as an entire drawing, that I really like. Just black ink on paper and lots and lots of lines as you can see :)

My first tshirt design

Been going through some of my old clothes from back when I was a child, and came across this.
My first tshirt design :) Hand drawn with some sort of textile crayons on a black tshirt.

The front features a rainbow, some sort of santa clause looking guy down in the left corner, a house in the lower right corner and the text "Kenny 4 år" which translates to "Kenny 4 years" I guess that means I was 4 when I made it :)
The back has some sort of gangsta motif, haha a Gun and the words "pi pii pii", I have no idea what that was all about.

Just started using a to me new animation software called; TVpaint 9.5. So far it seems like a great program. I'm looking forward to doing more work in this program, just need to learn all the shortcut keys from scratch, and all the new functions. Anyway here's a short test animation I did of one of my cameleons :) Have a great weekend!

Glesbygd'n - Välkommen Hem

Glesbygd'n is a reagge band from the north of Sweden, that do reagge in an old local northern sweden dialect.
And here's their latest video; "Välkommen Hem", Directed by Victor Lindgren.
I just had a small part in this production, I made the animations for the mouth and eyes of the strange white flobby creatures in the video. Enjoy!

Norma Jean - Video

Just before the summer holidays hit us last year me and Linus over at Popcore film, shot this music video for US hardcore/punk act Norma Jean.
We shot it on a Canon 7D DSLR. It was the first time for me working with that camera, and I really enjoy it.
But the rolling shutter problem is quite anoying. Hopefully that will go away or at least get better with newer versions coming out.

Below you can see a behind the scenes clip we put together for the video.
Parts of it was shot with a time-lapse app for the iphone, great fun. hope you enjoy them both.

Back in business

Hey all. I'm finally back to work and will do my best to kick start this blog back into life again, it's been more or less dead for far to long now, I know. I've been away for about 7 months taking care of my kid, but now I'm back at work again. I will start posting some work from last year that I haven't gotten around to posting yet, I'm also working on some new cool things both animations and illustrations.

Teaser of some new cameleon illustration work. I'm working on getting some prints out there as well. 2011 will hold some nice things, stay tuned.

So it's getting colder and colder here, and I'm starring out the window and the snow is falling once again. Time to get ready for 6 months of winter. Anyway it's about time to bring life to this blog again. First up is a illustration I made back in the early summer, for a invitation-card to a picnic celebrating the birth of our daughter Myra.

I really like how some of the characters turned out, might just see more of them in the future.

Kitchen collaboration - NK STOCKHOLM

This spring me and Robert Lindström did this illustration together. It will be put up on a wall in the kitchen at the North Kingdom office in Stockholm.

Robert worked on the overall concept/art direction and the girl on the left, and I did the octopus and jelly fish on the right.

Here's the first sketch that I received from Robert, and by that my starting point.

At one time it was just going to be jelly fish in the right area but we decided on a octopus as well to give it more life and for me to bring something more to this concept. Here's the first sketch I did, but it didn't feel just right.

So I reworked the octopus into a new style. But I liked that the octopus is asking her for a cup of coffee :) so that I kept.

I started working on the first drawing of a new series of illustrations today. I've been thinking about this for some time now and I'm very excited to see what it will end up looking like when it's done. And I have plans for a bunch more in the same series when this one is done.
Anyone who wants to take a guess on what this fist sketch is suppose to resemble? :)

My cat likes to be the center of attention, it's kind of hard to work when he ends up sitting on my drawings or falling asleep on top of them :P

Also I just read about this new documentary "Waking sleeping beauty", sounds like a great film I can't wait to see it. It's about the Disney animation studio between the years 1984 and 1994.

Two new illustrations

I recently finished two new illustrations for the youth branch of Swedish; Save the children.

They wanted two illustrations about gender roles and the norms that restrain us.

The first one is an illustration about breaking free from norms and gender roles.

And this second one is about; how we are molded into different gender roles in different situations. So for example the line of crosses represents biological gender, the line of pyramids; legal gender, the cylinder line; social gender, and so on. And how some fit into these roles and some don't and some are more or less trapped in them. And in the end of the lines it's transformed into a new shape representing all different types of gender roles in one single shape.

Cameleon portrait process pt.1

First post of the new year!
I'm working on a new illustration of a pile of cameleons coming together and forming a face. Above is a film from when I was drawing the linework. Music by DZR:P, check them out.

Since I could not fit the entire drawing in my scanner I had to scan it in parts and reassemble them on the computer afterwards.

Cleaning up the linework, there's always alot of dust and imperfections when you close enough to it.

So I cleaned it up digitally to get more clear lines.

Trying out a few different coloring options, not finished with that part yet stay tuned for the finished product.

The finished linework. I'm working on the coloring now. My aim is making this into a limited silkscreen poster print when it's done.

And possibly do a few more illustrations in the same series to go with it.
If anyone know of any good silkscreen artprint studios that will ship to Sweden, please let me know.

So december is just around the corner, and christmas is getting even closer.
Last week I finished up the new poster for Brrrap!! Brrrap!!
This time we decided on a underwater theme, and I love drawing underwater
creatures. I will do some decorations as well, later on for the event itself,
will post some photos of that when it's done.

Here are a few books I really love and they have been hugely inspiring.

Finally got hold of "the Line King" a few weeks ago, been waiting to watch this documentary for some time now.
The Line King is the a documentary about Al Hirschfeld, one of my favorite illustrators of all time, he truly was "the line king" :)
if you're not familiar with his work you should check it out.
And if you get a chance do watch the documentary I found it extremely inspiring.

Moloken record cover

Made this record cover for Moloken's debut album this summer, it will be released early september over
at discouraged records. The visual concept revolved around the titel of the album "our astral circle",
that everything comes in circles repeating itself. In the booklet I used semi abstract photos of details
in the forest, the photos can be seen below:

I just remembered this illustration I did for the Swedish Save the children youth branch, this spring, I think I forgot
to post it here then, but here it is. It was used as a cover for a book (will post a photo of the book later).
I got the brief it should symbolize the two youth organizations Allan and Ellen's struggle and energy.
And I came up with this idea of using paint in a lot of a different vibrant colors dripping and floating
around and that they form a fist in the middle between the two youth organization logos.

Miss Julie - Opera illustration

2 Months ago I made this illustration for Norrlands Operan, the opera house in Umeå. It's the poster for
a new opera version of August Strindberg's Miss Julie that they are setting up this fall.
You can read more about the event at their homepage here.

Above is the final version of the illustration.

This is the next to last version which is my favourite, it's a bit darker and less saturated.

I thought I would write a few words about the process and share some images.
The brief was to create a illustration that would work as a poster for the opera. This would be a new interpretation of
August Strindbergs classic Miss Julie, that would now be set in the 1930s colonial Africa on a rubber platage in the jungle.
They where looking for a creppy feeling with big insects and thick jungel that in a way kept miss Julie from leaving.
I started going throu old photographs of hairstyles and clothes from the 30s along with pictures of jungle, plants,
rubber trees and alot of insects to find the right style and inspiration.

Here's my first rough sketch, I think I had some thumbnail sketches in a sketchbook to but can't seem to find them right now.

I then continued on to a pencil sketch of Julie leaving the background for now.

After that I started inking. I found this really nice box of nibs for crow quills on a auction site, great find.
So this is what I use for the inking along with Black indian ink.

Inking process.

Every once in awhile Lego comes along looking for attation :)

This happends from time to time it's verry annoying but I guess I'm not that used to inking with a quill yet.
If you can't see what I mean it's the black spot that is suppose to be a white pearl in a neackless.

Almost done with the inking.

Details...details...details it's hard to stop when you work on a highly detailed drawing you can always add more and more.
The trick is know when it's enough.

So this is the final inked drawing, now time for some clean up work on the computer and coloring.

I scanned the drawing in 2 sections, because it was drawn on a A3 sized paper and I don't have that big a scanner.
So 2 sections then pieced it together in photoshop and cleaned up the lines.

Laying out some "flats".

And setting up some different layer masks.

So now we are moving on to the coloring.

Adding details to Julie's face, some eyelashes and freckles.

Trying out an idea I had from the beginning with black liquid rubber running down Julie's face and arms.
But I felt it would have been a to dark and scary look for this project so I decided to leave that out.

Adding some more highlight to Julie's skin and some other parts of the illustration like the birds and hair.
The character collects birds in the opera so that's why the are incorporated and the hair starts to form bird,
giving it a more surrealistic feeling and suggesting that her situation is also a struggle for her in her mind.

Adding some final details to the veins entangling Julie's arms.

And some final touches on Julie's face, some extra highlights here and there and so on.

This was a very fun project and I've been looking forward to doing a project in this style for a long time.
So I finally got a great subject to try it out, and the end result is really nice I think.
Illustrating 1930s fashion and hairstyles, and thick wild jungle is really fun so I will probably return
to that in one way or another in future illustrations.
Anyway I really like the way this turned out, I hope you do to :)

Just bought Björk's new Voltaic cd/dvd box set (2 cds and 2 dvds) really nice.
I would so like to see her preform live but this will have to do for now.

Oh by the way if you are a firefox user, you should get the new version 3.5
since it has better color profile support then older versions.

Telenor animation

A few months ago I worked on this Telenor commercial as a animator / character designer.
If you live in Sweden you have probably seen it several times on tv.
It was directed by my friends over at Popcore for Acne film.
The model city/railroad was built by Mats Sahlström (Eljest film) and Anders Hellström (Manick Produktion) And the stop-motion animations was done by dockhus animation.

I made the short animation in the beginning of the knight and princess.

I started this drawing in december last year but it has never been completed. It was supposed to be
used for record cover when completed but the plans changed along the way.

Went to Stockholm yesterday to attend a concert with Neurosis. I've seen them once before and this was a equally great experience as last time. it's always great to see a band you have admired since what seems like forever, and you have so high expectations and they still deliver on all marks. From what I've heard after this tour they will never tour again so I'm glad I've gotten the chance to see them twice now, the have influenced me a lot in my taste in music and a lot of great band would never have existed or sounded remotely close to what they do today if it wasn't for Neurosis.

North Kingdom creativity ads

I finished up the adds for North Kingdom last week, that will be printed on huge canvas backdrops and placed on the
main stage at "Trästock festivalen" a anual free music festival in Skellefteå. Below you can see a sketch of how they will

Back to the future

Found some old music videos (click the links below) I've worked on together with Popcore film.

They where created spread throughout the last 3 or 4 years so some are quiet old, and the first work I did when it comes to music videos. They where all directed by my friends at popcore and my part have mostly been animations but on some of them I helped out with other parts as well; like photography, and conceptualizing the idea.

Anyway some of you might not have seen them, since I haven't updated my portfolio since like forever or 5 years to be more exact :)

But a new portfolio is in the works I'm gonna pick up work on it after summer vacations is over so it will hopefully be up and running this autumn, really looking forward to that, but until then enjoy this old projects:

Last week I sent some new tshirt designs for the 2009 Picnic with panic summer collection, to the printers. They should arrive in a few weeks time. Here are some previews of the designs.

My underwater traffic illustration :) The colors don't really match up and there will be a few different color combinations for the t-shirts.
Not quite sure what this animal is called in english is it "anteater"? anyway he is eating icecream :) This design will be on white tshirts.

It's been awhile, I've been working on a lot of new stuff, and will start sharing some recent work soon. Until then I thought I would give some reading tips on a few books I've recently read.

The third policeman by Flann O'Brien

- Probably the strangest book I've ever read but I loved it. Don't really know how to explain this or give a proper summary of it with out going on telling you the whole story but it involves rooms where time does not exist, people turning into bicycles, a postman who is 71% bicycle, building boxes within boxes, mystery and hidden roads.

Man in the dark by Paul Auster

- I've heard a lot of good things about the writings of Paul Auster so I had to check it out, this is one of his more recent books. I really enjoyed the first part of this mystery story involving parallel universes and dreamlike scenarios, but felt a bit disappointed of the second part but I will definitely have to check out more of his books, the new york trilogy is suppose to be really good.

The secret life of Houdini by William Kalush and Larry Sloman

- This is a biography of the life of magician and escape artist Harry Houdini. If you liked movies such as the prestige and the illusionist or are just a fan of illusions you should definitely read this book. Found it very interesting and hope it will be turned into a good movie some day soon :)

While spring cleaning my apartment today I found a few old drawings, I don't know how old they are but spreading a few years back at least.

I used to draw a lot of these sorts of characters but I guess they have evolved into something different now, I think the last one I made in that sort of style was the "earth intruder" canvas print / illustration.

This is a very early drawing of these sort of blobby style things I've been experimenting with a lot over the years.

Hmm I think this might actually be the first one I drew in that style, or started drawing it looks incomplete.

Here is a typeface I made for the animations in a Norma jean video I worked on a few years back together with Popcore film, I think that was the first time I worked on a music video.

Here's a few progress steps of the latest brrrap!! brrrap!! illustration.

First of all I've scanned the internet for inspiration material such as mugshots and photos of raccoons.

First drawing of the head of the raccoon, made the dark areas around the eyes into a mask alá comical burglar. All done in illustrator.

Final line work for the raccoon, or maybe this isn't the final version there might have been some additional details put in there.

And here is the final colored version. Brought the linework into photoshop and colored it there and put some concrete textures on the background giving it a more trashy dark feel and added erosion to the size indications on the wall. I like the final result except for the hat didn't really end up the way I hoped but didn't have time to alter it and it works this way to but could have been improved I think.

This movie by Marc Forster called Stay is really amazing I just re-watched it again and I just love it. I really like mystery movies and this is a great mystery story. Apart from that the music is wonderful so is the acting. And the fluidness of the editing is just amazing like the transition between shots is probably the best I've ever seen. If you like mystery stories you should definitely pick this up.

Pictoplasma 2009 picture heavy

Me and Maria went to Berlin last week for the 3rd Pictoplasma conference, great fun here are some pictures and stuff from the trip.

We arrived at Tuesday in Berlin and started by finding the hotel then realizing we where just on the outer edges of kreuzberg we went for some shopping, there is a really nice comic book shop in kreuzberg by the way.

Then we found this vegetarian burger place called "Yellow Sunshine" that all our Berlin visiting friends been bragging about, greeeeeeaaat place check out the 10 or so vegan burgers on the menu :)

Mmmm a Double chicken hawaii vegan burger :) I wish there was a place like this in Sweden :)

There was even a burger called "lappland" haha wonder what that came from? It had a huge soy steak instead of burger.

And this is my favorite along with the hawaii a soy burger with nachos and peanut sauce.

Next day the Pictoplasma character walk started. With a walk around Berlin visiting about 30 different exhibitions connected to the pictoplasma conference. A lot of nice artwork, very inspiring indeed, just check out this plush lower jaw thing above :)

Stairway going up to a great shop / gallery, can't remember the name of it but it's a great place, lots of books, art prints, breakcore music and tshirts, and the gallery shows as well. anyway look at this stairway haha so cool you would never see something like this in downtown Stockholm :)

The gallery show inside features pixel like artwork made up out off post it notes, great idea.

Tim Biskups paintings, this has got to be my favorites in the exhibition. Really cool, and he paints with vinyl cell acrylics the same colors used for hand coloring cartoon cells. I have to track these colors down would be so nice to paint with.

The work on the new Logh video continues, playing around with the textural look of the creature / main character here, giving him a more organic feeling, blobby blobby, think this will look nice, will post some animation previews soon.

I'm giving a short presentation on my work tomorrow evening at portfolio a place where people get a chance to see what creative people are up to in Umeå, between 5 or 6 people at each event get to show there work for a few minutes each. Was a lot of fun last time, bet it will be equally fun this time.

All 4 cast members of Seinfeld are reuniting for multiple episodes of HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm. This is so cool, can't wait for the new season. If you don't know Curb your enthusiasm it's a show written and staring Larry David the co-creator of Seinfeld. It's probably the best comedy show of the last 10 years.

It will be called "Brrrap!! Brrrap!!" a british slang term that has it's root in the uk garage scene or as urban dictionary says:

"Brap!! - A sound uttered when a heavy tune comes on usually heard in garage raves.

Combine with gunfingers for best results.

Banjo or freakout

One of the best music finds I've made this year. Really nice lofi music reminds me a lot of stuff that's been coming out of anticon over the years. He released a cover cd that feature covers on artist such as Burial, Radiohead, Sonic youth and a bunch more, I think it's like 11 tracks. It's sold out now but you can find some songs on the internet if you search a bit.

Anyway check out his music great stuff.

POPCIRKUS - making of...

Hey, finally some new stuff on the blog :)

So I posted earlier about the Popcirkus opening sequence I worked on last month.

So here are some screenshots and quicktime clips I saved during the progress.

The Brief was to make a opening sequence for a new tv program for SVT (Swedish television) called Popcirkus. The program would focus on bringing live music to the tv screen in a 90 minute weekly based program featuring 3 band per episode amongst other things, and the bands / artist would get to play their music infront of a live audience and at the same time broadcasted live on Swedish television. The Brief also consisted of making a logotype for the show and graphics for signs showing artist name and song titel.

So our idea was to make a rocky and vivid 2D animated intro of different artists morphing from one to another illustrating the adrenaline, power, and enjoyment of a live concert.

Very rough storyboard. I had very limited time to get everything done before the airdate considering it would all have to be animated mostly by hand, so I just made some very rough storyboards to map out my ideas for myself, you probably won't get that much out of them thou.
First rough logo idea sketches. First thing that came to mind was making the logo out of real life objects. At first I thought about making the logo out of record sleeves, vinyl records and cassete tapes but quickly changed to more suitable instruments and objects that could be found on a stage during a concert.

Vectorising the logo and trying a somewhat different approach then the initial sketch.

First test of what the logo might look like in the opening sequence.
Final logotype, above a more rough version in dark blue and below a clean version.

This is a question mark that would be used in a segment of the show, made in the same manner as the logotype.

First look and feel test of the animation. Started out as a very colorful and poppy style.

...then got a bit darker, and added more paintbrush like textures.

Finally decided on going on a more earth-tone color look and reducing the colors.

Below are a few quicktime clips of the work in progress.

Here is the first reference movie witch we then used as a guide when creating the animations.

It's compiled out of different live concert stock material from the television channels archive.

Some rough animations made it into this first version as well.

First look and feel animation test, trying out colors and style.

More experimenting with color and style, as you can see the first versions where very colorful.

Not really knowing where to go colorwise and getting a bit to messy look with all the diffrent colors blending together.

Staring to find the real look of it. Reducing the colors and focusing on a grey / off white background with darker elements and have two main colors red and blue.

A difrent sequence with added background objects from a stage.

First version with the opening sequence in it's whole still lacking a lot of details and final touches.

logh - death to my hometown

I recently started working on a new video for the band Logh
The video will be for the song "death to my hometown" from the album north. And it's going to feature a hungry galactic creature eating up the galaxy. I will post stuff continuously during the process, so here are some early sketches from my moleskine to begin with.

2009 is getting closer and closer, so I though I'd make a list of a few of my favorite albums from 2008, Ok I realize some of these are actually from 2007 but they deserve a spot here anyway :)
Ok here goes in no particular order:

GIRL TALK - Feed the animals
I saw Girl talk preform at this years Roskilde festival, and it was so good, feel in love with his mash ups immediately. Mixing everything from popular music from the last 30 years or so. Check out his liveset if you get a chance.

THE FOUNTAIN - Soundtrack
Loved the movie "the fountain" by Darren Aronofsky, and the music by Clint Mansell is equally as good.

BRICK - Soundtrack
Another of my favorite movies "Brick". And the soundtrack here also helps a lot. I love how lo fi it is, some parts made with stick hitting metal pipes and pots and stuff like that. Also check out the behind the scene feature about the soundtrack on the dvd, very inspiring.

COCOROSIE - The adventures of ghosthorse and stillborn
Cocorosie's latest album is easily my favorite. And I love the fact that they have moved more and more towards a lofi hip hop sound on some tracks, ditching the normal singing for rap. I hope this evolution will continue.

DAFT PUNK - ALIVE 2007
Daft punk has always been great and here is a collection of all their best stuff but live. I hope I will get to see them live in a near future, seems to be such an amazing liveact.

WHY? - Alopecia
Been a huge fan of Why? for a long time, but felt kind of disappointed on his last few record they've been good but I loved the old more rough sound he used to have, now it more pop than the old lofi rap. But this record is really great everything is so good, and as always the lyrics! gotta love those lyrics!

WHY? - Alopecia demo
Wow this is probably even better than the album it self :) All tracks from the album but in demo versions. Very rough unpolished versions of the songs. Some are just why? singing into his Dictaphone.

DOSEONE - Skeleton Repellent
Doseone has to be one of the most productive musicians alive. And this is his latest solo album which follows in the footsteps of HA, but gets even better here.

HARAM - Drescher
The first Haram album is one of my favourite albums of all time. I haven't found this follow up to be equally as great but it does come close. Never the less a great band.

THE DARK KNIGHT - Soundtrack
Great teatrical and epic soundtrack, love the opening track. This might even get an oscar we will see.

CAGE - Hell's winter
Probably my most listen to album of this year. Great hiphop produced by El-p. Waiting for a follow up to be released early next year.

UNITED NATIONS - s/t
Power violence revivalist united nations with members from Converge and Thursday.

CULT OF LUNA - Eternal kingdom
Easily Cult of luna's best album to date. Darker and more epic than before, can't get much better than this.

SNÖRAS - Plague waters
Norway is on a roll. Enegetic and powerfull, a great follow up to their debut record.

MUSCLES - Guns babes lemonade
"Ice cream is gonna save the day!"

THE HOOD INTERNET - Mixtape vol. 2

Best Radiohead album since Kid A.

BLOC PARTY - Intimacy
The latest Bloc party record, actually I've just recently started listening to bloc party, love the band and haven't had time to listen to the new record that much yet but what I've heard is great.

DJ MAYONNAISE - STILL ALIVE
Great lofi electronic record released by Anticon.

LUKE STAR - Lake toba
Great band from norway sounds sometime pretty close to Mew from Denmark.

AMPERE - the first five years
Great collection of Ampere's work over the last five years, they have always done really great records, and this is a good place to start if you've never heard them.
